Dale Bumpers

First elected to the U.S. Senate in 1974, Senator Dale Bumpers is now in his third term as a Democratic Senator from Arkansas. Before joining the U.S. Senate, Bumpers served two terms as Governor of Arkansas.

Prior to entering politics, Bumpers practiced law, operated a small hardware, furniture, and appliance business, raised Angus cattle, and had several other business interests. During those years Bumpers was also active in community affairs, serving as city attorney, president of the school board, and president of the chamber of commerce.

The Senator serves as the Chairman of the Senate Small Business Committee, is ranking member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and Chairman of its Subcommittee on Parks and Public Lands, and serves on the powerful Appropriations Committee.

Senator Bumpers has received numerous awards and honors, including being chosen as one of the best U.S. Senators in a poll of Washington correspondents. He was named the top Senator orator in a USA Today poll of Senate press secretaries, was chosen as Legislator of the Year by the National Wildlife Federation in 1983, and received a Certificate of Recognition from the National Taxpayers Union in 1984.
